Syd Tie Top & Dress Sewing Pattern

The Syd Tie Top & Dress is a versatile pattern that allows you to make either a loose, full-length Top or a flowy, tiered, mid-calf Dress. With either option, you can add a 3/4-length puffy sleeve or go sleeveless. Whatever direction you go, the pattern features its signature front-tie closure.

Suitable Fabrics

For this pattern, our top recommendation would be a woven cotton or linen with a moderate or fluid drape between 3-7 oz per square yard. Stiffer fabrics with a voluminous drape can be used, but may result in a “poofier” garment. Knit fabrics with a lot of stretch are not recommended, as they can cause the binding construction to be quite tricky.

Body Measurements

This garment is designed to have a slightly relaxed fit around the bust and a very relaxed fit throughout the waist and hips. If you prefer your garment to be less oversized, consider sizing down. You can find the finished garment measurements on page 5 of the pattern instructions to help you decide.

We recommend choosing the size that is closest to your bust measurement, as that will be the most closely fitted area (although it is still quite relaxed).

Fabric Requirements

This chart shows the exact fabric requirements needed if the fabric is cut while flat and not folded.

The measurements are the minimum amounts needed and does not account for fabric shrinkage because all fabrics shrink at different rates. Please take this into account when choosing fabric.

IMPORTANT: If you are making a top or dress with sleeves, you will need to add 1 1/8 yards (100 cm) of fabric. For example, if you are making a size 18 dress from 60" wide fabric, the chart below shows that you will need 2 5/8 yards (235 cm). If that dress is going to have sleeves, you would need an additional 1 1/8 yards (100 cm), totaling 3 3/4 yards (335 cm).

Helpful Tools

In addition to your standard sewing kit (machine, pins, measuring tape, etc.), here are a few tools I’ve found helpful in making my Syd Tie Tops & Dresses. More details in the pattern and video tutorial.

Fabric Recommendations
  • 1

    Strawberry Linen

A linen/viscose blend is a favorite fabric of mine for the Syd Tie Dress. It has the perfect combo of texture and drape.

  • 2

    Playful Woven Cotton

My favorite wovens come from a brand called Fableism (sold here by Blackbird). They have stunning yarn dyed cottons, any of which would work beautifully for this pattern.

  • 3

    Soft Washed Denim

Denim and chambray can bring a casually cute mood to your Syd Tie Dress or Top. My chambray Syd Tie Dress is the most worn version I’ve made.

  • 4

    Striped Linen

For the Syd Tie Top especially, I love a good striped linen. Matchy Matchy Sewing club always has a good selection of cute but casual striped options.
