Saundra Skirt Sewing Pattern

The Saundra Skirt features a flowy A-line shape, a comfortable elastic waistband, roomy pockets, and an optional lining. Its vertical panels create an elongating effect and allow you to embrace your inner patchwork goddess if desired. The pattern also includes an option to add godets for extra twirl and movement.

Suitable Fabrics

For this pattern, I recommend lightweight wovens (between 2-6 oz per square yard) with a moderate or fluid drape. If you are lining your Saundra Skirt and/or adding godets, I highly recommend using lightweight fabrics (especially for the lining itself) of 4 oz or below. Using thicker fabric can make the lining process and waistband construction quite tricky.

Avoid knit fabrics or fabrics with a lot of stretch.

Body Measurements

This garment is designed to have a small amount of ease through the waist, and flare out below the hips. The elastic waistband allows a comfortable and easily adjustable fit at your waist, so I would recommend choosing your size based mainly on your hip measurement.

Fabric Requirements

These chart shows the exact fabric requirements needed if the fabric is cut while flat and not folded. The measurements are the minimum amounts needed and do not account for fabric shrinkage, which occurs at different rates for all fabrics. Please take this into account when choosing fabric.

Note that I have broken down separate requirements for the simple skirt (no lining or godets, but includes pockets), godets alone, and lining with pockets.

For example, if I were making a size 14 skirt with godets and a lining, I would get 2 1/8 yds of my main fabric, 7/8 yds of my godet fabric, and 1 3/4 yds of my lining fabric (if all fabrics are 60” wide).

Helpful Tools

In addition to your standard sewing kit (machine, pins, measuring tape, etc.), here are a few tools I’ve found helpful in making my Lane Pants. More details in the pattern and video tutorial.

Fabric Recommendations
  • 1

    Block Print

Block prints are great to use for the Saundra, because they're lightweight but don't always need a lining - like this Fluid + Drape x Hey Sew Sister Bowie organic cotton!

  • 2

    Yarn Dyed

Blackbird always carries great yarn dyed cottons and linens, which make for a beautifully flowy skirt. Try this red checked linen I used for my own Saundra.

  • 3

    Lightweight Denim

My denim Saundra is one of my favorite versions! Just be sure you're getting something lightweight, like this 4 oz denim shirting.

  • 4

    Cotton Eyelet

Playing with a peekaboo fabric like eyelet works well because you can easily add a lining. This lightweight eyelet from Salt Lake Sewciety would be gorg!
