Suitable Fabrics
For this pattern, you can use anything from quilting cotton to flannel, sherpa, pre-quilted fabric, and more. Our favorites are generally cottons or linens, between 3-7 oz per square yard. We strongly discourage making your bias binding from fabrics on the heavier side of that range, as it can make the construction quite tricky. Knit fabrics with a lot of stretch are not recommended.

Body Measurements
This garment is designed to have a slightly relaxed fit throughout the bust and waist. As opposed to a fitted waistcoat, the Ruby Vest has more of a boxy fit while not being truly oversized. If you want an oversized look or intend to wear your Ruby Vest over large sweaters, we recommend sizing up 1 size. If you want a slimmer fit, size down.
The quilting process can cause slight shrinkage in your vest, and the pattern pieces account for that. If you opt not to quilt, consider sizing down 1 size.
We recommend choosing the size or sizes that are closest to your bust and waist measurements. If those measurements do not correlate to one size, choose the larger size.
Fabric Requirements
This chart shows the exact fabric requirements needed if the fabric is cut while flat and not folded. Note that the requirements are for both the main fabric and lining fabric, you’ll need the same amount of each. You will also need the same amount of quilt batting if you are opting to quilt your Ruby Vest, but it is optional.
The measurements are the minimum amounts needed and does not account for fabric shrinkage because all fabrics shrink at different rates. Please take this into account when choosing fabric.
IMPORTANT: If you are making your own bias binding, you will need to factor in additional fabric. If you choose to make your binding from either your main or lining fabric, factor in an additional 1/2 yard (0.46 meters) when selecting fabric. If you choose to make your binding from a different fabric (not main or lining), you will need an additional 3/4 yard (0.7 meters).
