Skyline Dress Sewing Pattern

The Skyline Dress is about to be your new go-to garment. The breezy, comfortable design includes a tiered-or-not skirt, pockets (duh), and adjustable straps finished in a bow. Depending on how loosely you tie your straps, the Skyline can transform from a standout standalone to the ultimate layering piece. Not to mention the dozens of ways you can customize your dress.

Suitable Fabrics

For this pattern, I recommend woven cotton or linen with a moderate or fluid drape between 3-7 oz per square yard. Stiffer fabrics with a voluminous drape can be used, but they may result in a “poofier” garment. Fabrics with a lot of stretch or a loose weave like gauze are not recommended, as they can make the binding construction quite tricky.

Detailed Skyline Dress Tutorial

Body Measurements

This garment is designed to have a slightly relaxed fit around the bust and a very relaxed fit throughout the waist and hips. If you prefer your garment to be less oversized, consider sizing down. Use the finished garment measurements on page 5 of the pattern instructions to see how much ease your finished Skyline Dress will have in the bust, which will help you choose your size.

Because the Skyline Dress is only fitted around the upper bust (and flares out from there), you will choose the size that is closest to your full bust measurement. Waist and hip measurements are negligible for this pattern.

Note: Your bra cup size will not affect the pattern size you choose, as this dress design flares out from the upper bust and does not cinch back in below the bust.

Fabric Requirements

This chart shows the exact fabric requirements needed if the fabric is cut while flat and not folded.

The measurements are the minimum amounts needed and do not account for fabric shrinkage, which occurs at different rates for all fabrics. Please take this into account when choosing fabric.

Note that this chart is for the tiered version of the Skyline Dress. If you are altering your dress to be shorter/longer, fuller/narrower, have more/less tiers, etc. see page 32 of the pattern instructions for fabric requirement recommendations.

*This denotes that the fabric width is insufficient for this size's Skirt Bottom Tier (G). Either choose a wider fabric to make the pattern as designed, or you will need to modify the skirt. For example, you could cut the bottom tier in multiple panels and piece them together (I talk through this in the video tutorial!) or omit the bottom tier entirely.

Helpful Tools

In addition to your standard sewing kit (machine, pins, measuring tape, etc.), here are a few tools I’ve found helpful in making my Skyline Dresses. More details in the pattern and video tutorial.

Fabric Recommendations
  • 1

    Block Prints

I cannot recommend block prints enough for this breezy dress pattern. Especially in a dark color like this one from Fluid + Drape.

  • 2

    Gingham Linen

No surprises here — gingham makes for a very fun Skyline Dress. This 5 oz linen is one of many great options from Blackbird.

  • 3

    Black Linen

There’s a reason the Little Black Dress is famous. I’ve used this flowy linen/viscose blend for several projects — it would make an amazingly classic Skyline Dress.
