Lane Pants Sewing Pattern

The Lane Pants are high-waisted, with a comfortably wide leg and buildable elements to help you customize your dream pair of pants. Pick and choose cargo pockets, a drawstring, or opt to keep it simple. Depending on what design elements you like and fabric you choose, you could create anything from linen trousers to pajama bottoms to structured cargo pants and beyond.

Body Measurements

This garment is designed to have a very relaxed fit throughout the hips and crotch, while being snug around the waist. If you prefer a slimmer fit, we recommend sizing down.

We recommend choosing the size or sizes that are closest to your waist and hip measurements. If those measurements do not correlate to one size, no worries! Consider grading between sizes by simply drawing a new line between the waist and hip measurement of the two sizes.

If your waist measurement falls in between two sizes, choose the larger size. You can always trim down the elastic before inserting it into the waistband to get your preferred fit.

Fabric Requirements

This chart shows the exact fabric requirements needed if the fabric is cut while flat and not folded.

The measurements are the minimum amounts needed and does not account for fabric shrinkage because all fabrics shrink at different rates. Please take this into account when choosing fabric.

Helpful Tools

In addition to your standard sewing kit (machine, pins, measuring tape, etc.), here are a few tools I’ve found helpful in making my Lane Pants. More details in the pattern and video tutorial.

Fabric Recommendations
  • 1

    Cotton Twill

My very favorite pair of Lane Pants was made from this exact 9 oz cotton twill from Blackbird. It gives the pants a more structured look, and also holds up well in fall and winter.

  • 2

    Gingham Linen

Gingham linen + Lane Pants = match made in heaven. Midweight linens work best in my opinion, like this 6 oz gingham from Fabric Godmother.

  • 3

    Animal Print Denim

Get funky with your Lanes by using animal print. Plus, this structured denim will keep you firmly out of pajama pant territory.

  • 4

    Solid Linen

You can’t go wrong with solid linen. Matchy Matchy Sewing Club always has a good linen selection to choose from.
